Historians Against Trump and the Role of Expert Opinion

A petition named Historians Against Trump has taken off recently. It is, as the name suggests, a coalition of historians who are concerned about the rise of Donald Trump and believe it to be their duty to warn against it. However, the profession is hardly united in its belief in this duty: history professors Stanley Fish and Jonathan Zimmerman both take issue with this letter, on the grounds that the Historians Against Trump seem to be acting as if history yields an impartial truth.
